About the Book 1972: Transitions

Running translates into a way of life.

My Track & Field experiences have taught me that where one thrives and flourishes is where your gift lies.

After graduating from college and getting married, Bence felt lost, spending two years searching for his meaning promised by Bowerman, and hitting dead ends.

Bence remembers what Bowerman promised to his incoming freshman class, “If you can find meaning in the kind of running you have to do to stay on this team, chances are you will be able to find meaning in another absurd pastime – Life.”

In July 1977 he interviewed with Nike and was hired on the spot; it all felt right.

Pre had been quoted:

“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”

Bence, with his wife Mary, prepared to move to Taiwan, Bence vowing to give his best, without really knowing what the future held.
